The LEJOG cycle route is a challenge and Ian Currie, Martin Beeson and Phil Swan are embracing that challenge. The ‘boys’ met through the Nuffield Health, Wellness & Fitness Centre (the gym!) in Chichester, Martin and Phil both work and train there; the three quickly became firm friends. When Ian told the boys about his plan to undertake his charitable ride; he instantly had very keen company.
The group will be cycling South to North via a recognised and practiced route as detailed on the map shown left, that you can follow. They may deviate slightly from these plans depending on any unforeseen detours required along the way! They intend to head off to Penzance on Saturday 21 May and to begin their exciting journey on Sunday 22 May with a schedule finish on Sunday 5 June in Scotland. Averaging 70-80 miles each day, their chosen route is approximately 1,100 miles.
In an effort to add their own unique stamp on this particular LEJOG venture, at each stop, the trio have decided to plant a tree; hence the aptly named TREE-O. Each tree will have its own brass plaque and stake, and be dedicated to a loved one – trees can be ‘sponsored’ for a donation of £200 and each one purchased will include details of the co-ordinates and a photograph of the allocated tree; a lasting and living memory to a loved one.
You can read about each of the boys in the following pages, follow their blog as they begin their training and then keep track of them as they start their epic journey North. You can also keep updated via their Facebook and Twitter pages – such technology!!
To lighten each day’s mood and liven up their ride, the boys will have a daily sweepstake; the initial one probably being for the first one to get a puncture, of course. All ideas gratefully received on this one!
In the support vehicle, Ian’s wife – Karen and their friend, Abi, will also follow the LEJOG route. From the comfort of the 4×4, they plan to meet the trio for their food breaks during each day and at the daily destination chosen for the night. The girls will also carry the various spares and repairs needed plus other essentials like Ian’s spare reading glasses, Martin’s hair gel and Phil’s little black book! They welcome any passengers wishing to join them for lunch or accompany them for any ‘legs’, en route. It is hoped that a few friends and family may be able to join the group at stops along the way, particularly the final and most important landmark – JOG (John O’Groats)
